Quilters Affair - Greta Needle Roll and Robin Run the Hedge Class

I am sitting in Charlotte, NC trying to get home to my own bed. I left Sisters, Oregon yesterday morning (it is now Monday night at 7pm) and have been diverted many times due to weather and engine trouble. At times I have wondered whether I will be home and packed in time to leave for Alaska on Wednesday morning at 6am. Please cross your fingers I get home tonight! I am using my time wisely and have uploaded all my pictures to my blog from my wonderful week in Sisters, OR. I plan to do a few posts to cover the week.

I have just spent a wonderful week in Sisters, OR teaching at Quilters Affair. I taught 5 days of classes. The first one was my Greta Needle Roll. We worked with textural fabrics, ribbons, beads, stitches and made roving balls by hand.

Each student used unique fabrics and ribbons to make their pieces very personal.

I also taught a three day class of Robin Run the Hedge. I loved this class as all the students had time to cut out and lay out most of their design. We then spent the last day working on stitches that they could incorporate on their applique.

They got a really good start and I can't wait to see the finished pieces.

I finished the week with a full day of making leaves using great embellishment techniques.

It was a fun filled week with enthusiastic students that keep me hopping.

Workshop at Home

A couple of weeks ago I did a private workshop in my studio. We worked on the embellishment of leaves. Each student appliqued leaves onto a background prior to class. This gave them a good base to embellish.

We had fun creating with baby rickrack, beads, buttons and wonderful threads and fibers.

Each student had a great time working on a one of a kind piece.

I can't wait to see the finished samplers.

Student Work

I love to get pictures from my students of their finished quilts and projects. This Magnolia Quilt was done by Holly Regan from Cooma, Australia. Last year I taught this class while teaching at many different venues in Australia. She was in one of my classes, her quilt is wonderful and the quilting is fabulous.

Here is a block from Magnolia which Bobby Brady from Ohio made into this great purse.

She has done many stitch embellishments which we covered in the class which I taught at her guild. Susan Trent of Quiltworks Northwest in Seattle WA teaches a wool class and while I was teaching at the store many of her students brought their quilts to share. They worked on my Ginger Grove quilt. I love all the creative changes that each student made to the original design. Really creative!

Darlene Wegrynowski of Ohio sent me these great pictures of her pillow from my pattern in American Patchwork and Quilting. Fun colors!

Jennifer Keltner from Des Moines, Iowa finished her Folklore quilt. Fabulous!

Weekend in Seattle

It was great to have Jason, Aimee and my parents join me for the weekend in Seattle. What I love about being close to the ocean is the wonderful seafood that it offers. We had a great meal at a local restaurant on the wharf.

We also went to the aquarium and walked down to the Olympic Sculpture park which over looks the bay. Pikes market as usual is very fun to visit. I loved the blanket of color from all the flowers in the market especially all the Peonies which were in full bloom.

The seafood at the market was a visual feast.

The weather was perfect all weekend and it was really great to spend time together. I then flew home and Aimee and Jason returned to Spokane to spend time with my family.

Will be posting student work this week before I leave for the Sisters Show on Sunday.

Quiltsworks Northwest, Bellevue, WA

I had a great time in Seattle. My class was filled with very creative students who all pushed themselves to try new stitches and work with new textural fabrics.

I was in heaven as Quiltworks Northwest is also a bead store and they have an incredible selection of beads for embellishment. So as you can imagine I also had the opportunity to buy some fun stuff for my stash.

Some students added more textures to the background piece before we layered the leaves, birds, berries and branches.

This leaf is embellished with a fly stitch using seagrass and bullions using a Valdani perle cotton. These are two of my favorite threads. These berries are embellished with a variegated Valdani thread which completely changes the look using a fly stitch and then below using a combination of the fly stitch and bullion knots.

Is this not fun using our pom pom ribbon it adds such texture to the wool.

As you can see even though all the students started with a similar background each piece is starting to take on its own journey.
